our history: why 43 years of family owned and operated service matters

in 1966, james "wally" f. wallace set up his own one-man operation in a small building behind his residence in mount airy, maryland. wally had learned the trade from his wife dolores' father, herbert eckart, founder of eckart brothers in baltimore, maryland. wally's specialized in custom fabrication of steel rails and porches.

in 1970, having outgrown the backyard building, wally purchased a larger building about two miles east and relocated his business. wally's two sons, dennis w. wallace and james "butch" p. wallace started working with their father right out of high school and continued to help wally's grow into a thriving business that incorporated in 1974. wally purchased the present 5 acre property at 17560 frederick road, mount airy, maryland in 1985, then retired to sunny florida and sold the land and business to dennis.

in 1989, dennis erected a 16,000 sq. ft. building which at the time seemed too large for his small business. however, the business grew considerably. wally's now specializes in aluminum and steel railings and stairs, structural steel, miscellaneous metals and i-beams.

in 1990, dennis' two sons, carl w. and matthew w. wallace, joined the company, making wally's iron works, inc. a 3rd generation family owned business that provides services for both residential and commercial customers. we service the baltimore, washington, northern virginia, and southern pennsylvania areas. ten years later dennis made carl and matthew corporate owners and vice presidents of the business.

in 2006, the wallace’s began the erection of an 8,000 sq. ft. addition to the existing building to accommodate larger structural steel fabrication and to install a powder-coating operation which we call mt. airy coatings, llc and is owned and operated by carl and matt wallace. the addition and mt. airy coatings, llc were up and running in the spring of 2007.

so, you see, we've been satisfying customers for over 4 decades and we expect to be doing so for many more (all under the same ownership which is rare these days). to be in business this way... for this long, we must be doing something right by our customers.
